Fire Men's Tennis emerged victorious from a two-game Tuesday, handling NCAA Division III Adrian College in the first contest, 7-0, and defeating yet another Division I program in Saint Joseph's University 4-1. With these two wins, the #7 Fire advanced to 7-3 on the season.
In the first contest versus Adrian College, Southeastern played different lineups than usual. Regardless, the Fire took care of business.
Mark Griffin and
Piero Fernandez defeated Kasper Olofsson and Brandon Falk in the first doubles flight 6-2, and in the second line
Sam Reeder and
Riley Dodd of SEU took their match over Luke Holowinski and Jackson Wilcox by a score of 6-2, and
Gustavo Rubio and
Federico Boscolo completed the doubles sweep of Adrian College winning a tight match over Lucas Coutinho and Sean Ruhf 7-5. These three wins gave the Fire an early 1-0 lead.
Singles was much of the same recipe, Southeastern controlled the games from the start, none of the games went to third sets, and only one set was within two points.
Alejandro Orihuela commanded his contest in line one over Falk, 6-0, 6-1 and Reeder's contest at line four was second to finish as he turned in one of his best performances of the season winning 6-0, 6-0 over Ruhf.
Griffin ruled his match over Olofsson, 6-3, 6-2, and the third flight was fourth to finish with Rubio winning against Coutinho 6-1, 6-2. Lines five and six finished fifth and six, Boscolo picked up another personal win on the season, defeating Holowinski 6-3, 6-1. Lastly, Dodd earned a win over Walter Darren 7-5, 6-0.
Against the Division I St. Joseph's Hawks, the Fire, like the match against Adrian, started quickly in doubles, winning the second and third flights. Victor Pilla and Orihuela, competed against Justus Agbo and Stergios Papadopolous and blanked them 6-0, Griffin returned to action with Fernandez defeating Eli Gand-Dy and John Butler 6-2.
Bruno Pessoa and
Diego Menendez's contest versus Ernesto Ruy and Othmann Bezzaz went unfinished, as the Fire had already gained the two wins necessary in doubles, the score was 5-5 when the match was called.
Singles went the Fire's way as well, only dropping one game total, with two going unfinished.
Piero Fernandez in the fifth line ended his match first with a confident win over Jack Campbell 6-0, 6-2. Pilla of Southeastern fell to Bezzaz 6-1, 6-1 in the third line which was the only point for the Hawks in the evening. The Fire's #45 Pessoa won his game in line two 6-4, 6-3 over Ruy, and the last match that ended the day on a high note for the Fire was Griffin's 6-2, 1-6, 10-5 victory over Gan-Dy.
Two matches went unfinished, both were contests in which St. Joseph's was leading. #28 Pessoa's singles round in line one against Justus Agbo went unfinished with Pessoa down 6-2, 5-7, 0-4. The fourth line with Orihuela in his fourth game of the day, second versus Papadopolous was called early with Orihuela down 2-6, 4-5.
The Fire return to the courts tomorrow, this time in Orlando, Fla. to take on Judson University in hopes of a road trip sweep. The game begins tomorrow at 3 p.m.
