Box Score Fire men's tennis got back on track with a tightly contested win over #13 Cumberland University (Tenn.).
The Fire barely squeaked out a point advantage in the doubles matches, taking two out of three with the last game being decided by one point.
The first doubles contest to finish was between the Fire's
Victor Olivera and
Alejandro Orihuela winning 6-3 over Cumberland's Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira. The Phoenix bounced back, snatching the second flight 7-6. In the third and final match, the Fire outlasted the Phoenix with
Bruno Pessoa and
Diego Menendez coming away with a 7-6 win over Elisey Kalashikov and Paul-Daniel Meyer.
The singles matches were just as exciting. Ferreira of the Phoenix came back to defeat Pessoa in the top flight in a three set match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The second line favored the Fire as Menendez did his job, defeating Hrzic in two sets, 6-4, 6-3, and in the third match to finish Fernandez from Southeastern claimed a nailbiter over Meyer 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. To finish the deal, Griffin took care of business with German Suarez, winning in two sets 6-1, 6-4.
Orihuela had match points in his match at Line 5, leading 4-6, 7-5, 5-3.
The Fire return to action against Polk County and Sun Conference rival Warner University on February 28, the time for the match is undetermined.
