MOBILE, Ala. – Fifth-Seeded Fire Men's Tennis advanced to the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinal for the second straight season, fending off the 12-seed, Missouri Baptist in a 4-1 victory.
Doubles showed what kind of fight the Fire were in for. With No. 37 Pedro De La Riva and Gustavo Rubio leading the way with a 6–4 victory on flight two. Gonzalo Fernandez and Aristeidis Lafazanos sealed the deal with a win on the third flight.
The top flight went unfinished with No. 29 Piero Fernandez and Javier Gallego leading the No. 3 doubles team in the nation by a score of 6-5.
Southeastern carried that momentum into singles, winning three of the first four completed matches.
No. 17 Gallego proved his rank with convincing a 6–1, 6–4 victory over No. 41 Strahinja Radanovic on court two. De La Riva extended his win streak to 14 straight, defeating No. 15 Sebastian Junghanns 6–2, 7-6 (7–5) on court three. And the Fire's number one, No. 28 Fernandez put the nail in the coffin with a 6–2, 3–6, 6–1 upset win on court one over No. 14 Luca da Silva.
Missouri Baptist picked up its lone point on court four, where No. 63 Ruslan Anurev knocked off No. 23 Gonzalo Fernandez 7–6 (7–3), 6–2.
Two matches went unfinished. Lafazanos led 6–4, 5–5 on court, while Nikolas Kumria was in action in his third set, splitting the first two and the first two games of the third 3-6, 7-5, 1-1.
With the win, the Fire return to action at 10 a.m. EST, taking on the William Carey, the four-seed for just the second time in program history, and the first time on the national level.
