Fire Men's Tennis Returns to NAIA Semifinals with Shutout of William Carey

It was all Southeastern from start to finish, as they dominated the courts Thursday morning en route to a return to the National Semifinal

MOBILE, Ala. – Southeastern Men's Tennis punched its return ticket to the NAIA National Semifinal with a 4-0 shutout of the fourth-seeded, and previously undefeated William Carey Crusaders.

Doubles went quickly in favor of the Fire as flights two and three were secured.

Gonzalo Fernandez and Aristeidis Lafazanos struck first on flight three, rolling to a 6–2 victory over William Crowe and Artur Ibragimov. Not long after, No. 37 Pedro De La Riva and Gustavo Rubio clinched the point with a 6–3 win on flight two over Islam Orynbassar and Phil Steinbichler.

The flight one doubles match featured No. 29 Javier Gallego and Piero Fernandez locked in a tight battle with No. 24 Jean Nicolas Leblanc and Vinh Nguyen, trailing 5-4 when the match was called.

It was all gas, no brakes after that as the Fire rolled through singles to another National Tournament victory.

It was Lafazanos who extended the lead to 2–0 with a dominant 6–1, 6–1 win on court five over Steinbichler. De La Riva stretched his win streak to 15 straight, defeating Jean Nicolas Leblanc 6–2, 6–1 on court three to give the Fire match point.

And it was Gonzalo Fernandez who sealed the victory on court four 6–0, 6–4, defeating No. 66 Ibragimov.

Three matches went unfinished, including competitive battles at the top of the lineup. On court one, No. 28 Piero Fernandez trailed No. 36 Vinh Nguyen 6–4, 3–4, while No. 17 Gallego had split sets on court two, trailing 6–4, 5–6 before play was halted. Freshman Kumria was battling on court six with Nguyen leading 6–3, 5–5.

With the 4-0 victory, the Fire advance to play the No. 1 team in the NAIA in Georgia Gwinnett, tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST.
