Soccer to Host SEU Invite

LAKELAND, Fla.— The men's soccer team will face three opponents in seven days as they approach a busy next week of action.

After ending the SCAD Invitational with a 4-0 win over St. Andrews College, the Fire will travel to West Point, Georgia to play Point University tomorrow night.

The Fire and the Skyhawks have only ever played each other once in men's soccer. In 2013, Southeastern traveled to Point and came out victorious by a score of 4-1.

This year, Southeastern has been led by Jake Van Der Luit and Tauan Salgado on offense. Van Der Luit and Salgado each found the back of the net twice in the game against St. Andrews. Midfielder Jonathan Jimenez, who tallied a trio of helpers in the competition- two on Van Der Luit goals, is the Fire player who has recorded the most assists this year with three. Van Der Luit leads the team in scoring with three goals in Southeastern's two matches.

Jorge Navarrete has been a brick wall in net for the Fire so far this season. The sophomore keeper stopped a combined 13 shots on the road trip, six of which came in the shutout of St. Andrews.

Point comes into the match with a 1-0-1 record after a win in their initial game against Life Unviersity and a tie against Faulkner. Marvin Deans played balls to Juan Gomez, who slotted them home for both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the opener. The Skyhawks put the ball in the net three times in the second half, sparking a 3-2 comeback victory.

Deans and Gomez lead Point in assists and goals scored, respectively, with two apiece. In their 0-0 draw versus Faulkner, goalkeeper Ned Avies, saved four shots and kept a clean sheet for all 110 minutes.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Over Labor Day weekend, Southeastern will face Georgia Gwinnett College and Bluefield College in the first SEU Invitational.

The Fire last played Georgia Gwinnett in the 2015 season, when the Grizzlies took a close 4-3 contest after scoring three goals in the 77th minute or later. Van Der Luit had an unassisted goal early in the first half of the competition.

Georgia Gwinnett started their season off with a pair of 1-0 victories against Cumberlands and Union. Krishna Clarke and Jack Gurr found the back of the net for the Grizzlies, while defender Sagi Hirsch added an assist. The Grizzlies haven't allowed a goal in 180 minutes of action thanks to the play of goalkeeper Matija Gligorovic.

On Monday, the Fire will take on Bluefield College. Like Georgia Gwinnett, Bluefield began their 2017 campaign with a clean sheet victory. Salvatore Viola, Abel Bogale, and Kevin Stoffle all tallied a goal in their 3-0 rout of Grace College, as Sven Kleinhans was able to keep the Lancers off of the scoresheet. Kleinhans recorded three saves in the match.

Southeastern is set to face Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Bluefield on Monday at 12 p.m.
