BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. – Southeastern University posted the second-best round of the event as it competed at Wayland Baptist's 'The Battle' men's golf tournament.
The Fire were hot on Monday and fired off a team round of 289 for the second-lowest round of the three-day event. SEU's Spencer McCranie rose five places on Tuesday as he led the team with a +9/225 for 14th place. McCranie paced the Fire with the team individual round of 69, also on Monday, with an 82 first round and 74 final 18-hole score.
Host No. 13 Wayland Baptist outshot No. 2 Keiser University for the team title by three strokes, +23 (887) to +26 (890). SEU garnered 14th place in the 20-team field as it wrapped up the tournament with a 935-stroke total (+71). Along with its 289 second round, the Fire started off with a 331 on Sunday and finished with a 315 for Tuesday.
Individually, Wayland Baptist's Leonard Lebrun tied Kolby Shackelford of Ottawa (Ariz) University with an even par, 216, with Lebrun winning in a playoff. Colin Price of Texas Wesleyan was one stroke back in third at 217 (+1).
After McCranie's top SEU finish, the team's other four golfers were all grouped together. Connor Williams scored rounds of 83 to open and close with the second-best SEU round of 71 sandwiched between for his +21/237 for 61st place.
Marley Read and Nicholas Faraone were only two and three strokes back of Williams. Read tied for 73rd with a +23 (239). He had his best round of 76 on Monday after a tough 84-stroke first day and finished with a 79.
Faraone deadlocked in 79th spot with a +24 over par (240). After shooting identical rounds of 81, Faraone shot his best 18 holes with a 78 on Tuesday.
Zach Shaw completed the SEU contingent as he produced a 244-stroke score of +28 for a tie at 88th. Shaw started with an 82 before he posted his best day of 76 and stumbled a bit Tuesday with an 86.
SEU has a few weeks off before returning to action at the Florida College Invitational on the Tampa Palms Golf Club from April 13-15.
