LAKE WORTH, Fla. — Southeastern men's golf opened the Sun Conference Championship with a 10-over 294 on Sunday and sits tied for fourth after the first round at Fountains Country Club.
Southeastern is even with St. Thomas in the team standings, trailing leader Coastal Georgia (-3, 281) by 13 shots. Keiser (-2, 282) and Webber International (+1, 285) round out a tightly packed leaderboard heading into Monday's second round.
A key factor in Southeastern's position was its ability to limit big numbers and keep the ball in play. The Fire recorded 60 pars as a team, the second-most in the field, reflecting a steady approach even as scoring opportunities proved difficult to convert. That consistency kept Southeastern within range despite not posting a large number of birdies across the lineup.
Zach Shaw led the Fire with an even-par 71 and is tied for seventh individually. Shaw's round featured a clear shift in momentum after the turn. Following a front nine that included two bogeys, he settled in on the back with three birdies on holes 10, 12, and 14, briefly moving under par for the round. He gave one shot back with a bogey on 13 but responded with a composed finish, closing with four consecutive pars. Shaw's efficiency on par 4s has been among the best in the field, as he is currently tied for third in par-4 scoring at 3.91 (-1).
Connor Williams added a 2-over 73 and is tied for 17th. His round was defined by resilience after an early setback with a double bogey on the third hole. Williams regrouped effectively, playing much of the remaining holes at or near even and highlighting his back nine with birdies on holes 11, 12, and 17. A late bogey on 18 pushed him back to 2-over, but his recovery kept him in a solid position individually.
Gray Ottman sits just behind in a tie for 18th at 3-over 74. Ottman navigated a challenging stretch in the middle of his round with multiple bogeys but remained composed down the stretch. His lone birdie came on the par-4 13th, and he closed his round with a steady run of pars over his final holes to keep his score within reach of the top 15.
Marley Read posted a 5-over 76. A triple bogey on the fourth hole proved to be the most significant setback of the day, but Read responded with more controlled play over the final 14 holes. He mixed in a birdie on the 12th and limited further damage, giving Southeastern a counting score that helped maintain its place in the top half of the standings.
Scott Starbuck rounded out the lineup with a 79. His front nine included a double bogey on the sixth and multiple bogeys that pushed his score upward early, but he found improved rhythm on the back nine. Starbuck played his final stretch with more stability, cutting down mistakes and contributing to the team's overall consistency in the closing holes.
At the top of the individual leaderboard, three players share the lead at 3-under 68: Jake Ackerman of Coastal Georgia Mariners, Christopher Richards Jr. of Webber International Warriors, and Jose Vargas of St. Thomas Bobcats. With only five strokes separating first from fourth in the team standings, the championship remains wide open entering the second round.
The second round begins Monday morning with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m., playing off No. 10.
Scott Starbuck is set to be the first Fire golfer on the course at 8:10 a.m., leading a group that will look to build on its steady opening round.
