VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Fire returned to Georgia for the second time in two weeks. Zach Shaw led the Southeastern University men's golf team to a sixth place finish at the Kinderlou Forest Spring Invitational, hosted by Dalton State.
Shaw fired a five-over with a 221-stroke tally of the 3-round event. He had two the Fire's five scores of 73 or under. The junior started with a 73 first round before he had the team's best round of 72 as he finished tied for ninth as an individual.
As a team, SEU recorded an 897 (+33) for sixth place on the Valdosta course. Point University took away the title by 10 strokes over Reinhardt, +3 (867) to +13 (877) in the 8-team field.
Host Dalton State's Jack Whaley, the region's top golfer, led the top four golfers, who all shot under par for the tournament. Whaley won the medalist award by five strokes, -8 (208) to -3 (213), over Dominik Wolf from Point.
Sophomore Nicholas Faraone shot a solid three-round total of 223 (+7) for a 14th place finish. He started with an opening 76 before he tied the lowest round of 72 on Monday. He wrapped up with a 75 on Tuesday.
Second-year SEU golfer, Marley Read, shot up two spots in the final standings to 16th, one stroke behind Faraone. Read posted a 74 and then a 77 before he finished with his best round of 73 for the 224 final total.
Like Read, Connor Williams moved up on the final round by three spots. The freshman rose to a tie of 29th place for a score of 231 (+15). After he had scores of 80 and 78, Williams registered a 73 to move up the ranks.
Rounding it out for the Fire, junior Adam Crawley had a trio of even rounds of 79, 77, then 76 for a 232 total and +16.
SEU has a week off before it heads back to north of Atlanta at Newnan, Ga., for the Point University event at the Newnan Country Club on March 2-4.
