#7 Southeastern University Men's Tennis took a step once again on the tennis courts for their second home game of the week. This time they competed against #9 Middle Georgia State, dominating the Knights at home and coming away with a convincing 6-1 victory.
Doubles set the tone for how the match was going to be for the Fire as
Bruno Pessoa and
Diego Menendez took it to Guillermo Louis and Mauricio Olschansky 6-1 in flight one. In like manner,
Piero Fernandez and
Mark Griffin completed a dominant 6-2 win over Daniel Garcia and Adria Pratdepadua in flight three.
Flight three was called with
Alejandro Orihuela and Victor Pilla holding a 5-3 advantage over the Knights Martin Carrizo and Samyak Bajracharya.
Singles resembled the doubles matches. The Fire brought unmatched energy. Head Coach
Drew Dickens was interviewed after the contest and he said in regards to the men's six win week, "With six games in one week we could have come out with low energy, but they didn't make any excuses, they played excellent."
Line five finished first as Fernandez claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Pratdepadua, Griffin was next to conclude in line six, reaching another personal win as he defeated Bajracharya 6-1, 6-3.
Line's three and four ended soon after with Fire splitting contests with Middle Georgia State. Orihuela finished off an undefeated week with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Garcia, and the only point of the day for the Knights came with Louis's 6-4, 6-3 win over Pilla.
Orihuela commented on his recent success after the match, "I think I brought a lot of energy these past few matches, that was the key to having those matches in my pocket."
#45 Menendez triumphed over Gianmarco Pittoti 6-1, 6-4 in line two, and to conclude the match for the Fire #28 Pessoa capped off a remarkable second set comeback 7-5 after winning the first set 6-4, Pessoa was down 5-2 in the second set.
This impressive victory boosted the Fire to 10-3 and the eighth victory in a row, and also attributed the Knights their second loss of the season dropping them to 7-2.
The Fire host Division I Colgate University on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and RV Ave Maria University on Friday also at 1 p.m. for their second Sun Conference contest of the season, both games will be at the Beerman Family Tennis Complex in Lakeland.
