LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern won seven of the nine matches during their season opener against NCAA Division III Gustavus Adolphus on Monday at the Beerman Family Courts.
The Fire came away with a 6-1 win, getting wins in five of the six singles matches in straight sets and winning the doubles point.
Piero Fernandez and
Mark Griffin got the Fire a 1-0 lead by claiming the Line 3 Doubles match after the Fire took Line 1 with
Bruno Pessoa and
Diego Menendez winning by the same score.
Griffin was first off the court in singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 and
Alejandro Orihuela was next up at Line 5. Pessoa, ranked 28
th in the NAIA was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Division III's No. 43 Jack Bergmeyer to clinch the match.
Next up for the Fire will be a trip to Overland Park, Kan. for the ITA Indoor National Tournament on Friday.
