MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—Southeastern picked up its 40
th win of the season after dropping a one-run contest at St. Thomas.
The Fire battled back to win 9-1 in the second game of the doubleheader after a 5-4 loss in the first game.
The Bobcats needed just five hits to win the first game with two of them home runs, and were beneficiaries of eight walks.
Southeastern started the scoring with a two-out single to center field by
Gary Lora to score
Adonys Herrera who was 3-for-5 on the day.
St. Thomas answered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning, and added a two-run homer in the third.
Chayce Bryant and
Brandon Fields each had RBI doubles in the fourth and
Isaac Nunez scored on a throwing error in the fifth to get the Fire within a run.
In the sixth, the Fire had runners at second and third with one out but had one picked off and a groundout to end the threat.
Olvis Genao worked 3.1 scoreless innings, recording four strikeouts on 39 pitches to 13 batters. When the freshman came into the game in the fifth, it was with the bases loaded and two outs and struck out a pinch hitter. He also came up with a big groundout to end the eighth with a runner on third.
Josh Pigozzo started the scoring in the second game with the first of his two homers in the game in the third inning with a solo shot to left. St. Thomas tied the game in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single.
Bryant drove home Herrera in the fourth with a single to left, then Herrera made it 3-1 in the sixth with a solo homer to left.
Nicholas Block pushed the lead to three with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Fire then broke out five runs in the ninth with a pinch-hit RBI double by
Pablo Lanzarote, then back-to-back homers by Pigozzo and
Isaac Nunez and an RBI double by Lora.
On the hill,
Juan Pimentel moved to 6-0 on the year, allowing just one run on two hits over 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Robb Adams worked 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen with five strikeouts.
The 1-4 hitters for the Fire of Pigozzo, Nunez, Herrera, and Lora were responsible for 10 of the team's 14 hits. Lora and Pigozzo had three hits each.
The teams will meet Sunday at noon for the series finale.
