LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern scored all 10 of its runs in the first three innings and the bullpen held strong at the end for a 10-5 win in a non-conference game with Ave Maria Tuesday afternoon.
The Fire (13-0) sent all nine to the plate in each of the first two innings, scoring three runs in each.
Isaac Nunez drove in
Nick Winkelmeyer with a single to left field, then scored on an RBI single by
Chayce Bryant. Bryant came around on
Josh Pigozzo single up the middle.
The Fire took advantage of one of three Ave Maria errors in the second inning with
Adonys Herrera scoring on a throwing error. Pigozzo walked with the bases loaded and
David Castillo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-0 after two innings.
Herrera's RBI single in the third scored Winkelmeyer. Nunez came home on a first and third play and a two-run homer by Bryant, his team-leading sixth of the season, made it 10-0.
That was plenty of support for
Andrew Long, who improved to 2-0 on the season with three shutout innings on the mound. Long struck out three, walked none, and allowed just one hit.
A two-run homer in the fourth brought in a pair of unearned runs for the Gyrenes (9-4) and another unearned run scored in the fifth on a single to left field.
Over the last four innings,
JJ Sanchez,
Reece Wissinger,
John Jones, and
Hayden Brock combined for seven strikeouts, one walk, and two earned runs on two hits and lit up the radar gun in the process.
Nunez, Herrera, Bryant, and Pigozzo had two hits each. Bryant finished with three RBIs and Pigozzo with two.
Southeastern will return to action on Friday for a doubleheader against Point Park at 1 p.m.
