LAKELAND, Fla.—A pair of six-run innings helped Southeastern complete a three-game sweep of Ave Maria with a 15-5 win in seven innings to finish the regular season with a 47-3 record and 22-2 Sun Conference record.
The Fire had to overcome a home run on the first pitch of the game, answering with a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the inning which saw
Brian Fuentes score on a misplay in left field. Ave Maria regained the lead with a two-run homer in the third to go up 3-1.
In the bottom of the inning,
Abdel Guadalupe and
Isaac Nunez picked up RBI singles to tie the game.
Luis Cabrera put the Fire on top for the first time with a grand slam to center field for his 10
th home run of the season.
A two-run homer by the Gyrenes in the fifth got them back within two, but the Fire responded with another six-run inning. Nunez drove in his second of the game with a sacrifice fly and
Jose Aquino drove in another with a double to left field. A throwing error allowed
Thomas Broyles to score and Fuentes singled to left to bring in Guadalupe.
Enrique Porchas drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and
Francisco Thomas singled to left field with the bases loaded to end the game.
Gary Lora finished the game 3-for-3 with three doubles and two runs scored. Broyles and Fuentes had two hits each.
Logan Walters moved to 6-0 on the season with eight strikeouts over 4.2 innings of work.
Bryce Moyle and
Juan Pimentel each had scoreless relief appearances with Moyle going 1.1 innings and Pimentel working the seventh.
The Fire return to action on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the first round of The Sun Conference Tournament at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
