Box Score WILMORE, Ky.- A slow start and continuous turnovers were too much for the Fire to overcome, as the No. 7 Southeastern University women's basketball team fell to the Asbury University Eagles 78-63 on the road for their first loss of the 2020-21 campaign.
SEU conceded 15 three pointers to Asbury, who went 15-46 from behind the arc and attempted 46 of their 67 shots from three-point range. The Fire shot 33.9% (22-65) from the field, 30.4% (7-23) from behind the arc, and 50% from the free throw line (12-24).Â
The Fire trailed the Eagles 14-9 after the first quarter. SEU had a dynamic start to the second quarter, opening up the period on an 11-0 run to take a 25-19 lead.
Asbury responded to the SEU run, going on a 8-0 run of their own to take a 27-25 lead with 5:19 to go in the second quarter. The remainder of the second quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with the Fire holding a 36-35 advantage into the locker room.
Senior guard
Madi Hecox scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half, which tied for the team lead in points scored.
Turnovers plagued the Fire in the third quarter, as Southeastern committed 11 of their 26 turnovers throughout the period. Asbury scored eight points off of those 11 third-quarter miscues.
Southeastern trailed the Eagles 57-48 heading into the final period of play. A 7-2 SEU run to open the final period brought the Fire to within four points (59-55). However, that is as close of a margin the Fire were able to bring the deficit to in the fourth quarter. The Eagles closed out the remainder of the game outscoring the Fire 19-6.
Hecox hauled in 10 rebounds to go along with her 13 points to notch the double-double. Senior forward
Jade Odom also secured a double-double, scoring 11 points and hauling in 10 boards. Sophomore guard
Haley Howarth was tied for the team lead in points with 13 and brought in four rebounds.
Southeastern looks to bounce back on the road Thursday night, as the Fire take on Thomas More. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
