LAKELAND, Fla.—The Fire volleyball team put on quite a show in front of its home fans last week.
Southeastern went 2-0 last week in its first two matches at The Furnace in 2018, defeating both Johnson University-Florida and St. Thomas 3-0.
The Fire are now 12-2 in Lakeland over the last two seasons.
This week, it's back on the bus as the Fire head to Florida Memorial on Wednesday, then to Keiser on Saturday.
While there have been some consistent efforts from the likes of
Avery Bradshaw,
Courtney Krause, and
Keniah Rivera Santiago, the Fire have also seen various other players step up when opponents have keyed on one of those three.
Sophomore
Emily Boehlein posted six kills and a .455 attacking percentage in the win over Johnson University, and
Abigail Weaver had a career day against St. Thomas with 10 kills, three blocks, and a .409 hitting percentage.
Bradshaw is a big reason why the Fire are posting their best offensive numbers since joining the NAIA. The 2017 season saw the Fire post program-bests in kills per set (12.7) and attacking percentage (.224). Currently, SEU is averaging 13.2 kills per set and has posted a .248 attacking percentage.
Not to mention, its best win percentage ( .900) to start a season.
Krause has helped the Fire average 21.5 assists per game to start the year; a full three assists better than the current program record set in 2010.
Rivera Santiago has moved into the Top 40 nationally in digs per set, averaging just north of five, having posted 20 or more in five of her 10 contests played.
Florida Memorial enters the mid-week tilt with a 5-3 record, dropping a heartbreaking five-set match to Ave Maria Saturday. The Lions trailed 2-1, but forced the fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth by recording 13 kills and a .276 hitting percentage that set. However, the Gyrenes came away with the final set 15-12.
As a team, FMU has posted 97 aces in 31 sets. Yulianna Charris leads the way with 16.
Keiser is currently 6-6 on the season, coming off of a 3-0 loss at Coastal Georgia to open up Sun Conference play. It is a busy week for the Seahawks, hosting Webber International Wednesday, traveling to Trinity Baptist on Friday, then hosting Southeastern Saturday.
Abbie Seward is the top attacker for KU, averaging 4.2 kills per set, and has a .248 attacking percentage. Morgan Leff is the top defender at 3.9 digs per set.
