Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.—After facing tough competition in their first three matches of the season, the men's tennis team nearly took a match from a fierce conference opponent in SCAD on Saturday. The fixture came within a single point, but the Bees were able to narrowly escape against the Fire by a score of 5-4.
Impressive performances in doubles competition gave Southeastern an early 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
The number one pairing of
Lucca Marcheschi and
Aaron Skingley have played extremely well the past two matches, leading to back-to-back wins. Following a victory against the number one team from Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, the duo defeated SCAD's top pair 8-6.
Felipe Barbosa and
Thomas Ortega also got a big 9-8 (7-3) win in a tiebreak to hand SEU a one-point advantage after three matches.
Marcheschi and Barbosa were both able to notch their first wins in singles competition this season as the Fire tried to pull off the upset over the Bees. However, SCAD answered with a win at number two and triumphs in the four through six slots, despite being pushed to three sets in two of the matches. With the four wins, the Bees erased Southeastern's lead and took the team win 5-4.
The Fire will look to rebound when they travel to Ave Maria to take on the Gyrenes on February 17
th.
