Box Score 2 Brunswick, Ga. - To begin the day at the College of Coastal Georgia Invitational, Southeastern dropped their first match to the College of St. Mary Flames 3-1.
Led by the attack of Junior Uche Kojo and Senior
Lydia Rooth, the Fire had an impressive .357 hitting percentage in the first set, which they won by a score of 25-21.
After a slow start in the second, SEU tied the set, but a few key errors plagued the Fire on the scoreboard, and the Flames evened the match at one. By tipping the ball over the powerful Fire block, College of St. Mary was able to out-hit Southeastern in the third and fourth sets, winning those sets 25-23 and 25-18.
Kojo and Rooth, who had 10 and 11 kills respectively, tried to keep the Fire offense in the game, while
Alyssa Prescott added 18 digs to the defensive side.
Kelsey Morton impressed on both offense and defense as she recorded 8 kills and 3.5 blocks.
In the second match of the day, the Fire took on the host (RV)Coastal Georgia.
The Fire hitters were overshadowed by Coastal Georgia's attack, which boasted a hitting percentage over .500 in the first two sets. Allie Shannon had 15 kills and 5 service aces along with a hitting percentage of .750 for the Mariners.
On Southeastern's side of the court, the Fire spread the ball around, as 5 Fire players had at least 4 kills. Junior
Amy Schermerhorn boasted a .667 hitting percentage and recorded 4 kills. After dropping the first two sets, SEU started the third set off strong with a 6-1 run. However, the Mariners came back to take the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
The Fire will return to play on the road at Johnson University in Kissimmee Tuesday night.
