Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.- After a 10-day layoff, the Fire volleyball team was anxious to get back on to the floor. They were also looking to beat Clearwater Christian for the second time this season; a first in program history.
The Fire dropped the second set, but came back with 25-22 and 25-19 wins to close out the match with a 3-1 win over the Cougars.
Trailing 9-5 in the first set, the Fire rallied to take an 18-15 lead, thanks to senior Carol Reis picking up a kill and an ace. They were able to hold on and record a 25-21 win.
The Fire led the second set by as many as five, and led 16-12, but eight straight points by the Cougars, six coming from SEU errors, put the Cougars up 20-16. Clearwater Christian closed out the set by scoring the final two points in a 25-17 win.
That's when the match tightened up. In the third set, neither team held a lead of more than two until the Cougars went up 18-15. They also led 21-18, but a 7-1 run to close the set by the Fire gave them the win.
The final set was much like the third, tied at 18, the Fire closed the night with another 7-1 run to come away with the win.
Reis led the offense with 14 kills on 21 attacks, two solo blocks, and two assisted blocks. She also added nine digs. Lydia Rooth posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Both Alyssa Prescott and Lindsey Fleming had 21 assists apiece. Katie Trenski led the defense with 25 digs.
The Fire return to action on Thursday when they host Trinity College.
