LAKELAND, Fla. -- It didn't take long for Southeastern Men's Tennis to get rolling, cruising through doubles and coasting through singles in a 7-0 win over Walsh University. The victory also marked the 100th career win for Head Coach Andrew Dickens as leader of the SEU men's tennis program.
Doubles set the tone for most of the rest of the match.
Gustavo Rubio, getting his first action of the young season, with
Aristeidis Lafazanos, defeated Nicolas Stroehle and Ben Hoffmann on flight three 6-1.
No. 18
Gonzalo Fernandez and
Pedro De La Riva followed suit with a 6-2 flight two victory claiming the doubles point, and No. 6
Piero Fernandez and
Javier Gallego came soon after with a 6-3 victory on flight one.
Singles featured much of the same doubles domination. No. 11
Piero Fernandez got the party started with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Joan Dasi on line one, putting the Fire up 2-0.
Gonzalo Fernandez improved to 4-0 on the season in his first line three match of the season, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Lukas Kohler.
De La Riva clinched the match for the Fire on line four, dominating his way to a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
With the rest of the matches being played for points and personal records, the Fire finished the job. Lafazanos cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory on line five. While No. 13 Gallego ground out a 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 10-5 victory on line two, and freshman
Nikolas Kumria improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
With the win, the No. 4 Fire move to 4-2, as they head to the USTA Tennis Complex in Orlando, Fla. to battle Judson University on Thursday at 6 p.m..
