Fire Shut Down Florida National in Lakeland

No. 4 SEU flexed on Saturday afternoon, riding ranked singles to another shutout

LAKELAND, Fla. -- No. 4 Southeastern added a third straight victory to their schedule, and added to their perfect homestand this afternoon, knocking off Sun Conference foe Florida National, 4-0.

New doubles teams paired for the first action of the afternoon, and paid off almost immediately. Last years pairing of Gonzalo Fernandez and Javier Gallego blanked Dex Leyers and Mats-Jonathan Werner 6-0 on line two. Not wanting to be outdone, Piero Fernandez and Aristeidis Lafazanos followed with a result of the same against Mick Leyers and Lukas Kopitzki on line three.

The top flight from yesterday's pairing of Gustavo Rubio and Pedro De La Riva challenged Daniele Trentin and Ignacio Ibanez and was tied 3-3 when SEU secured the doubles point.

De La Riva, the reigning NAIA and Sun Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, continued his dominance, defeating Dex Leyers 6-0, 6-1 on line three. No. 10 Gallego followed soon after with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kopitzki on line two.

Now up 3-0, No. 16 Gonzalo Fernandez advanced his own personal record to 9-0 with the clincher on line four over Mick Leyers 6-2, 6-1.

Lines one, five, and six were stopped after the decider, and each of those featured the Fire up a set. No. 21 Piero Fernandez led Ibanez on line one 6-3, 4-1. Lafazanos up a set on Werner 6-3, and Kumria leading Anis Kerfah 6-3, 2-3.

With the Sun Conference matches coming to a brief halt, the Fire turn their gaze to Monday at 10 a.m., when No. 7 Xavier (La.) comes to visit.
