CLEVELAND, Ga. -- SEU Women's Soccer battled to a 0-0 draw on the road against No. 16 Truett McConnell Wednesday night at the TMU Soccer Complex, extending the Fire's unbeaten start to 2-0-1 on the season. The result snapped a streak of six straight losses to ranked opponents and continued SEU's recent success against the Bears, improving to 3-0-2 in the last five meetings.
The Fire applied pressure early, generating multiple quality chances in the opening half and forcing TMU goalkeeper Danica Wittmann into several key saves.
Ariadna Lozano led the attack with six total shots and five on frame, while
Madelyn Davidson and
Sara Irurozki also tested the Bears' defense with dangerous looks. Despite Southeastern's offensive activity and 11 first-half shots, Wittmann stood tall, finishing the night with 10 total saves to keep the Fire off the board.
Truett McConnell countered with moments of sustained possession and created chances of their own, but the Fire defense stayed composed under pressure. SEU's back line kept the Bears in check and limited them to three shots on goal despite 12 total attempts. In net, sophomore
Sofia Diaz turned in a calm, steady performance, recording three saves to secure her first career shutout and the team's second clean sheet of the season after combining for one in the opener against Thomas.
The second half featured more back-and-forth play as both sides looked for the breakthrough, but neither could find the finishing touch. SEU nearly grabbed the winner late as Lozano continued to create chances, but Wittmann's strong night in goal kept the scoreline locked.
With the draw, SEU remains unbeaten and turns its focus to another challenging road test. The Fire will head to Lawrenceville, Ga. on Friday, September 5, for an 11 a.m. kickoff against No. 17 Georgia Gwinnett, marking their second straight matchup against a nationally ranked opponent.
