LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- SEU Women's Soccer secured a signature road win Friday morning, shutting out No. 17 Georgia Gwinnett 2-0 at the Grizzly Soccer Complex. The victory moved the Fire to 3-0-1 on the season and snapped a 12-game winless streak against ranked opponents dating back to October 11, 2023.
The Fire opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when freshman
Olivia Hadad tallied her first collegiate goal off an assist from
Linn Adolfsson Funk. Just moments before halftime, Georgia Gwinnett earned a penalty kick with a chance to equalize, but sophomore goalkeeper
Sofia Diaz delivered the defining moment of the match, diving to her left to make the save and preserve Southeastern's 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Southeastern extended its advantage in the 64th minute when
Sara Irurozki scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season, continuing her strong start by finding the net in three of the Fire's first four matches.
From there, SEU controlled the pace and leaned on its defensive unit to close out the result. The Fire held Georgia Gwinnett to just one shot on goal in the second half despite facing seven corner kicks overall. Diaz finished with five saves, including a key stop in the 76th minute, earning her second straight shutout.
The Fire outshot the Grizzlies 19-10, including an 11-1 advantage after halftime, while maintaining composure against one of the NAIA's top-ranked programs.
Southeastern remains unbeaten through its first four matches and turns its attention to the next road test, visiting Florida College on Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m. in Temple Terrace, Fla.
