MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—Southeastern had to win four singles matches to knock off No. 5 Xavier (La.) and did to avenge a loss from the ITA Indoor Championship.
Of the four singles matches won by the Fire, three were against Top 75 ranked individuals.
A 6-0 win in the third doubles flight was the difference in the first point of the match as XULA's seventh-ranked No. 1 Doubles team won 6-3 and SEU's 40th-ranked No. 2 Doubles team of
Flaminia Guidantoni and
Ingrid Montserrat won 6-4.
Simone Simas upset No. 67 McKenna Wheatley at Line 4 singles 6-0, 7-5 to get the Fire their first point. XULA regained the lead with a win in the second singles flight and got within a point of the match with a three-set win at Line 3.
Martina Picardi upset No. 16 Mbali Langa in a third-set tiebreaker 7-2 to keep hope alive.
Irene Lopez won in straight sets to tie the match and Montserrat's 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 64 Valentina Largacha gave the Fire the win.
The Fire return to the courts on Saturday at home against Florida National at 1 p.m.
