MELBOURE, Fla.—A Top 10 NJCAA program is all that got between the Southeastern men's golf team and a season opening victory.
The Fire were just five shots behind No. 9 Central Alabama taking runner-up honors, but still came home with some hardware.
Matthew Soucinek was the individual medalist by one shot over Webber International's Vedant Sirohi. The graduate student opened with a two-under 70 in the first round and a three-under 69 in the second with six birdies. He closed with a 74 to come away with the win.
As a team, Southeastern opened with a team score of 302 with a 294 in the second and a 295 during Tuesday's final round.
Marley Read finished in a tie for 10
th at eight over, posting rounds of 75 and 77 on Monday and closing with an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Nicholas Faraone finished tied for 15
th in his SEU debut. After an 80 in the first round, Faraone came back with an even-par 72 on Monday and a 76 on Tuesday.
Noah Davis placed 22
nd with a total of 231 (77-76-78) and Zach Shaw was tied for 39
th with a total of 238 (86-79-73).
Next up for the Fire will be the Coastal Georgia Invitational beginning on February 12
th.
