Baseball Starts World Series with Championship Rematch

LEWISTON, Idaho—Southeastern begins play in the 2023 Avista NAIA World Series the way it ended the 2022 series.

The Fire will take on the host, Lewis-Clark State Saturday night at 9:35 p.m. Eastern at Harris Field.

LC State cruised to a 12-4 win over Indiana Wesleyan last night, getting home runs from Charlie Updegrave and Isaiah Thomas, and an 11 strikeout performance on the mound from Trevin Hope in 6.1 innings.

Southeastern is 13-5 all-time in the World Series and are in search of consecutive titles and third in six years. The Fire advanced to Lewiston after winning the Fayette Bracket of the opening round with a 3-0 record. Isaac Nunez led the team with eight hits during the week which included a pair of home runs. Adonys Herrera added five RBIs on his seven hits, and Stephen Cullen also had five RBIs getting four home runs in his five hits for a slugging percentage just south of 2.000 on the week.

The pitching staff posted an ERA of 2.00 in 27 innings and held opponents to just a .168 average. The nine pitchers used combined for 32 strikeouts. Including the conference tournament, the Fire pitching staff is 8-1 this postseason with a 1.80 ERA with 89 strikeouts in 80 innings.

This is the seventh meeting between the Fire and the Warriors with the first meeting coming in 2018 with a 9-6 win for Southeastern to earn a trip to play for the championship. The Warriors eliminated the Fire from the 2021 series with a 10-6 win. The teams played three times in last year's series with the Fire winning 9-5 before dropping a 10-9 championship game, then taking the winner-take-all game 11-5.

This year, the Fire were an 8-3 winner at Ted A. Broer Stadium behind homers from Nunez, Lora, Pablo Lanzarote, and Josh Pigozzo.

With a win, Southeastern will play on Monday at 9:35 p.m. Eastern against William Carey. A loss will send it to an elimination game on Monday against MidAmerica Nazarene or Cumberlands.
