Balanced Effort Leads Men’s Basketball over Suns

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern picked up its second win of the season by getting points from 14 different players.

The Fire moved to 2-1 on the season with an 87-57 win over Johnson University-Florida on Wednesday night

Defensively, the Fire held the Suns to just 8-of-38 from the field in the first half to lead 36-21 at halftime.

The second half started with the Fire connecting on their first five shots during a 12-4 run to take a 48-25 lead with 16:23 remaining.

The Suns (0-3) started to find a groove in the second half, scoring just as many points as they did in the first half in the first nine minutes of the second half thanks to a 7-of-14 effort from the field to open the second.

A 17-4 run by the Fire spanning nearly six minutes helped the hosts pull away at the end. Nathan Mikkelson had eight of those points.

Freshman Ja'Quay Randolph led the way for the Fire with his first collegiate double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, going 5-of-7 from the field and connecting on a 3-pointer.

Southeastern outscored JUFL 44-14 in the paint and held a 57-35 rebounding edge over the Suns.

Sean Shore was also in double figures with 11 points and had nine rebounds. Shore was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Derek Murphy added 10 points and six rebounds and connected on a pair of 3-pointers.

Makkai Vassell joined Mikkelson with eight points.

The Fire will travel north this weekend to take on Life University in Marietta, Ga. on Friday at 6 p.m.
