Fire Earn Sweep of Sand Sharks in SUN Opener Finale

LAKELAND, Fla.- The No. 3 Southeastern University Fire baseball team earned a sweep in their Sun Conference-opening series with a 13-8 victory in the series finale Saturday afternoon. The Fire scored their 13 runs on an impressive 15 hits.

The Fire jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after two innings after plating four innings in each of the first two frames.

Abdel Guadalupe and Gary Lora each blasted solo home runs in the bottom of the first. For Guadalupe it was his fourth of the season and for Lora it was his team-leading ninth long ball of the year. Stephen Cullen also recorded an RBI-triple in the first frame.

Isaac Nunez capped off the hot start for SEU with a bases-clearing three-RBI double to right center to grow the Fire lead to 8-0. Nunez finished the game 3-3 with four runs batted in.

Trailing 13-4, the Sand Sharks plated four unanswered runs to trim the deficit to 13-8. However, DJ Roberts closed the door on USCB in the top of the ninth with a game-ending strikeout.

Alex Munroe improved to 3-0 with the win on the mound coming out of the bullpen. Munroe tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief of Fire starter Juan Pimentel, who tossed 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, walking two, and striking out eight.

The Fire are back in action at Ted A. Broer Stadium this upcoming Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader versus the Florida National University Conquistadors. The seven-inning game times are scheduled for 2:00 and 4:30 p.m.
