LAKELAND, Fla.—Another impressive performance from start to finish allowed the No.1 Southeastern University baseball team to improve to 22-1 on the season with their 14-4 win over RV Bellevue University.
The Fire got out to a quick 8-0 lead after scoring four runs in each of the first two innings play, highlighted by
Blake Buckman's two run double in the first and
Sam Faith's three-run home run in the second.
Leading 9-0 in the fourth, starting pitcher
Drew Gillespie found himself in a bases-loaded jam with nobody out. He was able to escape the inning only allowing one run thanks to two strikeouts.
Gillespie talked about what changed that enabled him to escape the fourth relatively unscathed, "I tried to get the ball back down in the zone and throw it where I want. I missed a couple spots that let them get singles." His final line included six innings of work with the one run allowed, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out ten.
Anthony Carrera and
Colton Onstott each homered again, tallying home runs in back-to-back games.
Nick Bottari went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Fire scored the game-winning run in the eighth after
Carter Bridge was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Up next for Southeastern is a matchup with Dordt College on Wednesday at 6:30 pm.
