LAKELAND, Fla.—After improving their record to 21-1 with a 14-0 win over NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley State, the Southeastern University baseball team prepares for the three more home games this week starting on Monday night when the Fire host Bellevue University at 6:00 pm. Later in the week on Wednesday at 6:30 pm, SEU hosts Dordt College at 6:30 pm, followed by a matchup against Wayne State on Friday at 12:00 pm.
The Fire's power was on full display against the Cardinals on Saturday when the Fire hit five home runs, three courtesy of outfielder
Anthony Carrera who totaled nine RBIs.
Christian Camacho kept Saginaw Valley at bay, getting ten strikeouts in seven shutout innings.
Southeastern's offense remains among the best in the NAIA as they are ranked second with 200 RBIs and third with 238 hits.
Individually,
Nick Bottari is fourth in the NAIA with nine home runs, Carrera is sixth with 29 runs scored,
Pedro Castellano is sixth with 29 RBIs, and
Sam Faith is 12
th with 32 base hits.
On the mound,
Drew Gillespie's two runs allowed and ERA of 0.61 ranks 15
th in nation while Camacho is ranked eighth in innings pitched with 34.2.
Bellevue travels to Lakeland with an 11-5 record. They are coming off a weekend in which they swept Warner in a doubleheader on Saturday before losing to Webber International 6-4. Players to watch on the Bruins are Corey Jackson and Alec Lee. Jackson leads the team with an ERA of 2.50 and has recorded 34 strikeouts through 36 innings pitched. Lee tops the Bruins with a batting average of .358 and has driven in 13 runs. SEU is 2-0 in the all-time series.
Dordt has started their season with an even 5-5 record and have won four straight games. Opponents are currently outscoring Dordt 73-69 and have jumped on the Defenders in the early going, scoring a combined 40 runs in the first three innings. Logan Cline leads Dordt at the plate with a .500 batting average with four home runs and 15 RBIs. The Fire lead the all-time series 2-1.
SEU wraps up their week with a visit from the Wayne State Warriors who open their season tomorrow against Saginaw Valley. The Warriors held a record of 11-4 in the shortened season a year ago and return their top hitter in Hunter DeLanoy who hit .463 in 2020. Wayne State also returns pitcher Dillon McInerney who finished with a 2.42 ERA in 26 innings pitched. This marks the first matchup between these programs.
