LAKELAND, Fla.- On a night where the winds were blowing 15 miles per hour towards the infield, the No. 2 Southeastern University baseball team grinded out The Sun Conference Baseball Series of the Week opener Friday night 3-1 over the No. 25 Webber International University Warriors to win their 13th straight contest.
The Fire got the entirety of their run production on one swing of the bat, when senior first baseman
Nick Bottari belted a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the third to put SEU ahead of WIU 3-0. The long ball was Bottari's 12th of the season, who finished the night 3-4 at the plate.
Senior right-handed pitcher
Drew Gillespie turned in another dominant start on the mound for the Fire, tossing seven innings, allowing just two hits, one unearned run, four walks and 10 strikeouts, marking his second-straight start with 10 punch-outs.
Entering the top of the seventh with a pitch count over 100, Gillespie struck out the side to preserve the 3-1 Southeastern advantage.
Senior left-handed pitcher
Ryan Munoz replaced Munoz in the top of the eighth and was excellent in relief, tossing two shutout frames where he allowed three hits, no walks, and five strikeouts.Â
The Warriors got the tying run to second in the top of the ninth, however, Munoz ended the game with a strikeout.
Senior designated hitter
Colton Onstott joined Bottari in the multi-hit club, going 2-3 at the plate for the Fire.
Southeastern looks to earn the series sweep over Webber International tomorrow in an afternoon doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 and 3:00 p.m.
