AUBURNDALE, Fla.—A two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth helped Southeastern improve to 20-1 on the year with a 3-2 win over Point Park Sunday afternoon.
The Fire had a sluggish start at the plate, but
Drew Gillespie's performance on the mound kept his team in the game. Despite not factoring into the decision and having his scoreless innings streak to start the season ended at 25, Gillespie struck out eight and walked just one in seven innings of work.
A two-out RBI single by Point Park in the bottom of the third gave the Pioneers the early lead, but a two-out solo homer by
Nick Bottari for his team-leading ninth of the year tied the game in the next half inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, another RBI double for the Pioneers gave them the lead back but once again, the Fire answered in the next half inning with a
Pedro Castellano single through the right side to score
Thomas Broyles from third.
Castellano was 3-for-4 on the day.
Southeastern got a leadoff double to left from
Colton Onstott for his second hit of the day in the ninth. A fielder's choice bunt moved
Raymond Gonzalez, who pinch ran for Onstott to third.
Shamir Morales Moved
Jose Marcano to second to set the stage for
Anthony Carrera to bring in the winning run.
Brenden Heiss improved to 2-0 working a scoreless inning plus a batter in relief.
Ryan Munoz earned his first save of the season, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
The Fire return to Ted A. Broer Stadium on Saturday for a game against Saginaw Valley State at 1 p.m.
