LAKELAND, Fla.—Following a 12-day break for Christmas, the Southeastern women's basketball team will be back on the court and will put its 10-game win streak on the line Thursday afternoon against Brescia.
The Fire were scheduled to take part in a two-day classic hosted by Warner on Wednesday and Thursday, but Husson University canceled its trip south on Monday, "due to the (recent) Covid surge and the safety of its student-athletes."
SEU last took the floor during its Christmas Invitational, beating Talladega by 45 and Goshen by 31, which was the closest game the Fire had since December 10
th in a five-point win at Loyola.
Another highlight of the invitational was coach
Tim Hays becoming the program's all-time leader in wins with 157, which took just 168 games to reach. He passed Ed Plastow who amassed 155 wins from 2002-2009.
In the month of December, Southeastern has averaged 86.1 points per game en route to a 7-0 mark. The Fire have also connected on over 50% of their field goals, 66 3-pointers at a 41.2% success rate, and a stellar 78.9% at the free throw line. SEU is also nearly a +11 in the turnover margin per game this month.
Individually,
Angela Perry has averaged over 20 points per game this month, but the Fire have four other players averaging nine or more points per game.
Marta Aranda has connected on a team-best 17 3-pointers over the last seven games and is shooting 52.5% from the field to average 12.6 points per game.
Gabby Suarez has provided a nice spark off the bench, shooting 54% from the field and 58% from 3-point land and has averaged better than 10 points per game this month.
Southeastern will take on the Bearcats of Brescia, which come in with a 2-11 record and have lost six straight following a 15-point win at home over Indiana University-Kokomo. Guard Alecea Homer leads the way, averaging nearly 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game and is a 51.4% field goal shooter.
This is the final non-conference game of the season before an 11-game run through The Sun Conference into postseason play.
