LAKELAND, Fla.—After winning their two conference matchups last week, the Southeastern University women's basketball team is slated to face two more conference opponents this week. The Fire travel to Thomasville, Georgia to take on Thomas University at 4:00 pm on Tuesday before returning home to face the Warner Royals on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
In their first game since November 19
th, the Fire (5-2, 4-0 TSC) defeated St. Thomas 67-36. SEU shot 50% from the field while holding the Bobcats to just 23.7% shooting.
Gabrielle Ozoude scored a season-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win.
On Saturday, the Fire topped Florida Memorial University 88-54 thanks to another 50% shooting effort from the floor, compared to 27.9% for FMU. SEU was aggressive on the glass in this one, outrebounding the Lions 54-26. Sophomore
Haley Howarth led the way in scoring with 20 points, and tallied eight rebounds and five steals. Senior
Jade Odom joined Howarth with a strong offensive performance, totaling 17 points and dishing out four assists.
The Fire again presented themselves as a top defensive team as they enter this week as the 20
th team in the NAIA in defensive field goal percentage, holding opponents to 34.2% shooting. This turns into the Fire grabbing 32.3 defensive rebounds per game, good for 15
th in the NAIA.
Entering play this week, the Thomas Night Hawks are still looking for their first win on the season with an 0-4 record. Thomas fell just short in their last game, a 68-62 loss to Keiser University. Senior guard Alexis Powell is a player to watch for the Night Hawks as she is the team leader in PPG (14.3) and APG (3.3). The Fire are looking to increase their win-streak against Thomas to ten, winning those games by an average of 39 points.
Warner has gotten off to a 3-4 start to their season, going 0-3 against conference opponents. They picked up an 82-60 win over Trinity Baptist College their last time out. Reigning TSC Player of the Week Haley Gantt is the key player for the Royals, averaging 18 points, 11 rebounds, 1.67 blocks per game. Through seven games Warner is allowing 61.6 PPG to opponents, good for 42
nd in the NAIA. The Fire have had success against the Royals, winning 15 straight meetings after dropping the first eight matchups.
