Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.- The Southeastern University women's tennis team picked up where they left off in 2019 with an impressive 6-1 win over the Florida National University Conquistadors at the Beerman Family Tennis Complex in their 2020 season opener.
"I was pleased with the effort today against a Florida National team that is good on both sides," shared SEU head coach
Drew Dickens. "We saw a little bit of everything today and shook off some nerves. It was the perfect first match for us."
After an FNU forfeit at the third line of doubles, the duo of sophomore
Beatrice Letizia and junior
Angelique Myrtil came through for the Fire at the No. 2 slot 6-4 to earn SEU a 2-1 edge over Florida National and help the Fire capture the doubles' point.
Up 2-0 heading into the singles' portion of the match thanks to another FNU forfeit at the No. 6 line, the Fire continued to look more comfortable on the court.
Sophomore
Priscila Baptista made quick work of her opponent at the sixth position, not dropping a single game in the two-set sweep to put the Fire ahead 3-0.
Letizia clinched the match-winning victory for the Fire at No. 2 singles with a two-set sweep (6-2, 6-2).
Myrtil and senior
Sharienne Ricardo both earned victories via 10-point tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets at the No. 4 and No. 1 lines respectively.
"This match was more mentally than physically demanding for me," commented Ricardo. "I knew that I had to stay strong, believe that I could pull through the match, and I just fought hard."
The Fire look to carry their momentum into Sun Conference play as they travel to Lake Wales next Wednesday versus Warner for their TSC opener. Match time is set for 9:30 a.m.
