Women's Tennis Falls to No. 1 Keiser in Sun Conference Final

The Seahawks proved too much Friday morning, taking the banner

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A valiant effort was put forth on Friday morning by Fire Women's Tennis, but No. 1 Keiser proved to be too much, downing SEU 4-0 to take the Sun Conference crown.

Keiser set the tone right from the get go. The Apisah sisters were dominant at the top spot as the No. 1 NAIA Women's Doubles team, handing Alessia Ciampi and Martina Picardi a rare 6–0 defeat. But the Fire did not go away quietly, taking Alexandra Melnikova and Lena Couto all the way to extra sets, before the Keiser duo edged out Leonie Schondelmaier and Aurora Compagnucci 7–5 on flight two, clinching the doubles point.

SEU led on the second flight when the clinching point was played, Isabella Bolivar Garces and Irene Parigi up 5-4.

Similarly to the regular season upset, a massive push in singles was needed to complete another upset.

The No. 1 singles player in the NAIA Violet Apisah delivered a statement performance, overpowering Garces 6–0, 6–1 with on the top court. Moments later, No. 23 Melnikova extended the lead to 3–0 with a clean 6–2, 6–2 win over No. 25 Picardi on court two, putting Southeastern on the brink.

The clincher came at #6, where No. 59 Couto fended off the freshman Compagnucci 6–2, 6–2 to seal the match.

Southeastern's No. 34 Parigi, and No. 48 Schondelmaier had taken sets on the fourth and fifth courts, and No. 57 Ciampi trailed a set when the match was ended.

Despite the loss, the Fire have already qualified for the NAIA National Tournament having claimed the Regular Season Title, and will have time to reset as the tournament starts on May 12.
