Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The Southeastern University's men's tennis team earned an impressive 6-3 victory over the Ave Maria University Gyrenes. The Fire now succeed to a winning record of 3-2 overall in the season.
SEU started their momentum with a 2-1 win in doubles play.
The pair of
Felipe Barbosa and
Thomas Ortega earned the first victory for the Fire at No. 2 doubles 8-4. The duo of
Enrique Martinez and
Hugo Pires earned Southeastern the advantage heading into the break with a 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Southeastern went 4-2 against Ave Maria.
At No. 1 singles, Barbosa won in the extra set 7-5, after winning the first set 6-4 and losing the second set 6-3.
Sophomore,
Santiago Haas was the next to earn a point for the Fire, winning in the extra set as well. No. 2 singles, Haas won the first set 6-2, lost the second set 6-3, and then got the advantage after defeating the Gyrenes opponent 6-2 in the last set.
Senior,
Lucca Marcheschi clinched the match for the Fire, earning wins of 7-5 and 6-2.
Finishing the day for Southeastern at No. 4 singles was freshman Martinez, who won in two sets (6-3, 6-1).
The Fire hope to continue their momentum as they will travel to St. Petersburg to take on Eckerd College on February 25
th at 3:00 p.m.
