LAKELAND, Fla.—With a challenging non-conference schedule complete, the Fire will look to continue it's streak of 47 straight games against Sun Conference teams that have resulted in victories.
Seven of SEU's nine non-conference games have come against ranked or receiving votes squads. The Fire came away with wins in seven of those games with the only losses to No. 6 and No. 3.
Ball movement has been a big key to success, averaging 21.1 assists per game on an average of 29.7 made field goals per game. The Fire have also been active on defense, averaging 14.8 steals per game.
Makenzie Cann is coming off of Sun Conference Player of the Week accolades for some key shooting performances. Over her last five games, the senior has connected on 17 3-pointers. During that same timeframe, she's also dished out 33 assists, and recorded 16 steals.
The first test of 2019 comes in the form of Thomas University, which the Fire had a chance to watch during the SEU Classic last month. The Night Hawks sit at 5-11 on the season, and have dropped their last three and seven of their last nine.
Southeastern is 3-2 in Thomasville since 2013, and is looking for its third-straight win at TU in the series. Micah Garvin leads the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game, and is shooting 78.3% at the free throw line.
Saturday, the Fire head across Georgia to take on Coastal Georgia. The Mariners hold a 4-2 mark in Sun Conference play and sit in fifth place in the league. CCGA has won three straight, but haven't played since a 30-point win over Milligan on December 12
th. Brianna Gipson, Ayshia Baker, and Solrun Gisladottir all average more than 12 points per game for the No. 30 scoring offense in NAIA Division II women's basketball. The Mariners shoot 38.3% from 3-point range, good for seventh in NAIA Division II. Gisladottir averaged three 3-pointers per game and has made more than half of her attempts from downtown.
The Fire will be back at The Furnace on January 10
th to take on St. Thomas.
