Barbosa’s Wins Not Enough for Men’s Tennis

Box Score ORLANDO, Fla.—Despite both doubles and singles victories by Felipe Barbosa, the Fire came up empty against Loyola University (La.) in a 7-2 defeat.

To start the contest, Barbosa and Thomas Ortega took down Loyola's no. 2 duo 8-3, which gave Southeastern an early 1-0 lead, as they moved to 7-5 in doubles play on the season. However, the Wolfpack would rebound with wins at no. 1 and no. 3 to take a 2-1 advantage into singles competitions.

Barbosa continued his dominance in the no. 2 singles spot with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory, marking the sophomore's fifth individual win of the season. With the straight sets triumph, the Vila Velha, Brazil native holds the best record on the team in singles play with a 5-5 slate this year.

Although the Fire came out on top in the first match of the contest, Barbosa's wins were not enough for Southeastern. Loyola was victorious in five of six singles slots to clinch a 7-2 team win.

The Fire will take the courts again for Senior Day on Wednesday versus Warner. Matches are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. at Edgewood Tennis Center.
