Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.—Three clutch individual wins sealed the Fire women's tennis team's second straight triumph as Southeastern defeated Webber International by the slimmest of margins 5-4.
After falling in a 2-1 hole at the end of doubles play, SEU needed four out of six singles wins to come out on top of the Warriors.
Sharienne Ricardo took care of Isabelle Niehoff in straight sets in the #1 singles spot to move the magic number to three.
Following Webber victories at #4 and #5, Southeastern's remaining players would all need wins to ensure a victory.
Angelique Myrtil,
Gabby Marshall and
Sydni Brookhouser each lost their opening frames, but would battle back in dramatic fashion.
Myrtil won 12 of the 14 remaining games to close out her opponent at #2, while Marshall finished her opposition off by winning 12 of the last 13 games in the match at #3. Both Myrtil and Marshall shutout their respective opponents in the third set.
The match would then be decided by the #6 singles competition between Brookhouser and Alissa Riedel of Webber. The marathon contest, which featured several lengthy rallies, lasted nearly three and a half hours. With pressure mounting, Brookhouser was able to get the best of Riedel in the third and final set to earn her first ever collegiate win, while giving Southeastern the team victory and completing the unlikely comeback.
The Fire will travel to Coastal Georgia for their next match, a Sun Conference battle on Saturday.
