LAKELAND, Fla.—The Fire women's basketball team will put their 44-game regular season unbeaten streak on the line again this week as they face Warner University at home on Thursday before heading to Babson Park to take on Webber International on Saturday.
Still on Fire:
Southeastern has not lost a Sun Conference game in its last 31 TSC competitions, dating back to February of 2016. The reigning back-to-back conference champions have not played a game closer than 24 points in over two months and are coming off of a 33-point thrashing of Florida Memorial earlier this week.
A major reason for this year's success has been the well-roundedness of the entire team, from the guards to forwards.
The Fire have the players who lead the Sun Conference in points, assists, and blocks in
Ana Richter,
Halee Printz, and
Marlena Schmidt respectively. All three players rank in the top ten in the nation in those statistical categories, as Richter averages 24.2 points per game (2
nd), Printz averages 5.3 assists per contest (9
th) and Schmidt blocks two shot attempts per game (10
th). Richter also leads the country by shooting 69.9% from the field.
Warner Royals:
Southeastern's high-powered offense will take on a Warner's stingy defense in the first game of the week.
After beginning the season with a rough 3-6 record, the Royals have won five of their last eight contests. Warner's most recent triumph came against Keiser by a score of 68-55. The Royals had 15 steals in the competition as I'munique Green, Warner's leading scorer, dropped 19 points.
Warner takes care of the ball offensively and gets the ball back on defense. The Royals average 11.7 takeaways per competition, ranking them 18
th in the nation. On offense, the team is 19
th in the NAIA in assist/turnover ratio with Randi Chandler leading the way with a 3.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (fourth in the country).
Southeastern took the first matchup of the season against the Royals in commanding fashion by jumping out to a 49-10 advantage in Lake Wales. Five SEU players scored double-figures in the contest, led by 23 from Richter and 18 from
Jaycee Coe. Richter went 9-11 from the field, while Coe knocked down four of her eight attempts from beyond the arc in the 85-37 victory.
Webber Warriors:
Following their matchup with Warner, the Fire will travel to Babson Park to battle with another scrappy Sun Conference team in Webber.
The Warriors began their year much like the Royals did, going 2-8 in their initial ten games of the season. Since that stretch, Webber has won five of their last nine, but has only managed to pick up two conference wins so far. Their last TSC victory came just a few days ago when the Warriors eliminated a double-digit deficit entering the fourth quarter to top Keiser 70-69.
Webber is captained by Ashley Perry, who leads the Warriors in nearly every major statistical category. The senior from Leesburg, Florida averages 2.6 steals per game (31
st in the country) on the team that takes the ball away 12 times per contest (15
th-best in the NAIA). Perry has also rejected 20 shot attempts this year, putting her 49
th in that area.
When Southeastern and Webber met earlier this year, the Fire steadily grew their advantage over the Warriors quarter by quarter. The Fire, who are the best shooting team in the country, shot 50.0% on the day and forced 30 turnovers en route to a 92-53 win.
Tip off in the Furnace against Warner is scheduled for 6 p.m., while the game in Babson Park is set to begin at 2 p.m.
