LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 10 Southeastern University women's soccer team made a powerful opening statement in The Sun Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. The second seeded Fire soared past the seventh seeded USC Beaufort Sand Sharks 8-0. SEU outshot USCB 41-3. This marked the largest shot differential in an SEU win since the Fire outshot Johnson & Wales 41-1 on 9/23/10. With the win, Southeastern advanced to the semifinals tomorrow night and now sets its sights on the third seeded St. Thomas University Bobcats.
GAME: No. 10 (2) Southeastern (15-1, 9-1 TSC) vs. RV (3) St. Thomas (12-2-1, 8-2 TSC) Tuesday 7:30 p.m.
COVERAGE: LIVE STATS/VIDEO
SPREADING THE SCORES: Versus the Sand Sharks, six different players netted a goal for the Fire, the most in any single game this season. This included junior midfielder Lynsey Kelly and sophomore forward Rachel Wallace finding the back of the net for the first time in 2017. 11 different players have put one past the keeper for the Fire in their last four contests.
AISHA ASSISTS: With two helpers versus the Sand Sharks, freshman forward Aisha Solorzano posted her fourth multi-assist game in her last five contests. The Guatemala City native ranks seventh in the NAIA in assist with 14 despite having played in at least five less games than any other player who is top 15 in the category.
SHAYNA GOALS: Junior forward has proven to be a solid contributor in the final third for SEU down the stretch. Cole has four goals and two assists in her last five contests. The Dover, Del. native has also placed 53.8% of her shots on frame during that stretch.
PREVIOUS MATCHUP: Despite the Fire being held to their lowest shot output of the season (18), along with Kanu being held without a point for the only time all year, Southeastern defeated St. Thomas 2-0 on the road earlier this season. Cole and Solorzano netted both goals for SEU in the 53
rd and 54
th minutes. The Fire trail the all-time series to the Bobcats 8-6.
THE BOBCATS: St. Thomas outlasted the sixth seeded Thomas University Night Hawks 3-1 on its home pitch last Saturday night. Thomas tied things up 1-1 in the 67
th minute. The Bobcats responded with goals in the 74
th and 87
th minutes by junior forward Kortney Hinden, who notched her second multi-goal game of the season. STU has posted six shutouts versus TSC opponents this season, not allowed more than two goals scored in a conference game, and its only two losses in league play were to Keiser and Southeastern. The Bobcats will look to get their leading scorer graduate forward Jannel Johnson the ball in the final third. Johnson has 13 goals on the season but has not found the back of the net since 10/11.
