WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Fire traveled to Winter Park this afternoon where they battled against Rollins College in an exhibition game and came away victorious by the score of 82-72. Thus far in all ten games of the season, the Fire have beaten opponents by double digits, and that trend did not end today. The Tars got off to a hot start when they exposed early on the Fire's 2-3 zone defense. At the end of the first half, Southeastern was down by two. Momentum shifted, however, in the direction of the visiting team in the second half when the Fire transitioned to women-to-women defense and thwarted the Tar's offense.
Southeastern was led by Bailey Hooker and Christin Strawbridge who had 16 points a piece. Strawbridge, the transfer from Florida Southern College, also finished the game with a team leading eight rebounds. Of the nine Fire members who checked into the game, five ended the contest with double digit points, one of which was senior guard Alyssa Ramos. Ramos finished with 12 points and shot 57 percent from the floor. Freshman Trisha Jacobs of Millsap, Texas entered the contest averaging just two points per game, but that changed today when she finished with a career high 11 points against a formidable opponent.
Even though Southeastern captured the victory, they were outnumbered in a few categories. The Tars dominated in shooting percentage, shooting 42 percent from the floor compared to the Fire's 39 percent. This season against other adversaries, the Fire have out rebounded opponents 353-293; however, this afternoon the Tars won the war on the glass, out rebounding the Fire 52-29. Nevertheless, Rollins only shot 38 percent from the charity stripe, while the Fire shot 69 percent, contributing to Southeastern's 10 point victory.
Southeastern will use the momentum they have built up over the course of the season in Kansas next Saturday at 2:00 pm when they take on the #1 ranked team in NAIA DI, Mid-America Nazarene University.
