Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.—It's not often you can say a 3-0 match was close, but the Fire battled Sun Conference first place Warner to a 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 match, which saw 22 ties and 11 lead changes in an hour and 25 minutes.
The Royals (14-4, 9-0 TSC) got off to a fast start, leading 7-2 in the first set, but the Fire ended up taking a 22-20 lead, thanks to a 6-0 run. Three of those points came off the right hand of sophomore
Kelsey Morton, who finished the night with a team-high 13 kills and a .242 attacking percentage. Warner won five of the next six rallies to win the set 25-23, with three of those five points coming on Fire errors.
It was Southeastern (15-8, 6-4 TSC) that started fast in the second set, leading 5-2 early on. A 4-0 run late in the match by the Royals gave the guests the breathing room they needed to come away with a 25-20 win.
The third set was the most efficient of the night for the Fire, however, it was the best for Warner as well, which had 18 kills and a .297 attacking percentage. Southeastern had eight kills and a .179 attacking percentage in the third.
Lindsey Fleming had a team-high 18 assists, and
Alyssa Prescott and
Jordan Wheeler paced the back row with 15 and 10 digs, respectively.
Southeastern returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Ave Maria.
