Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – In their second to last match of the season, the Southeastern volleyball team defeated the Gyrenes of Ave Maria, 3-0.
The Gyrenes fought hard to begin set one, going ahead on two separate occasions and realizing their largest lead of the match, 9-6. The Fire maintained the lead after scoring their twelfth point, finishing the job, 25-14.
After going down 1-0 in set two, the Fire went on a five point run and maintained the lead for the remainder of the set ending 25-17.
Ave threatened to take the third set, staying tight with the Fire throughout. They led five times to the Fire's four and the score was even on seven different occasions. It wasn't until the Fire went up 19-18 that they would maintain the lead and slip by, 26-24.
Madeline Hanshaw and Carol Reis each registered nine kills to lead the team. Reis also recorded a pair of digs and four solo blocks while Hanshaw led the team in digs with eight, and assisted in four blocks.
The Fire move to 16-12 overall, 7-6 in the conference and prepare to take on Northwood tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at the Furnace in their last regular season match.
