The Fire women's tennis team jumped out to a 4-2 overall lead during singles play, but had to hang on to the very last point played in doubles to capture a 5-4 win over visiting Aquinas College, Mich. The Fire opened the match with Sadia Mayou, #1 singles, playing dominating tennis; she quickly dispatched her opponent 6-0, 6-1. All of the remaining matches were much closer.
Wendy Reade, #4 singles, won 6-2, 6-2, and teammate
Mason Bellar, #6 singles, won 6-2, 6-3 to push SEU's lead to 3-0.
Alexis Quinn, #3 singles, captured the final singles point for the Fire, earning a close 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win, and the fourth point for the Fire, with doubles still to be played. Aquinas College rallied in doubles, and it appeared as though the Fire's lead would not be enough to capture team win. At one point, all three Fire doubles teams were losing by several games in each of their 8-game pro-set matches. Eventually, Aquinas College would win at #1 and #2 doubles, leaving the match score tied at 4-4 overall. The Fire doubles team of
Stephanie Dodd and
Mason Bellar, #3 doubles, fell behind early. Down 1-4, Dodd and Bellar began a slow climb back in the match, and would eventually take a 7-6 lead. On the final point of the match,
Stephanie Dodd hit a sharply-angled cross-court backhand just out of reach of her opponent to secure the deciding team point of the match.
