Box Score ATLANTA, Ga.--The Lady Fire tennis team lost a heartbreaking match, Thursday afternoon, to Oglethorpe University, 5-4. The match saw three singles matches go to tie-breakers, with Oglethorpe winning two of the three matches.
The Lady Fire grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Autumn Housefield and Amanda Summers teamed up to defeat OU's Sarah Duff and Ladonna Barnes, 8-6.
Chelsey Lynn and Alexandra Fraser gave SEU a 2-0 advantage, after they defeated Jayme Danielson and Katarina Te, 8-6.
Oglethorpe avoided a sweep in doubles play, when Caffrey Francis and Kate Siess combined to win, 8-4, over SEU's Noelle Cottom and Wendy Reade.
Oglethorpe quickly tied the score, 2-2, in singles when Francis cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victory over Summers.
In the battle of No. 4 players, Cottom returned the favor for the Lady Fire, winning over Sarah Duff 6-2, 6-3 to put SEU back ahead, 3-2.
Katarina Te won a close battle over SEU's Alexandra Fraser, 6-4, 7-5, to once again even the match three games apiece.
Then, the Lady Petrel grabbed their first lead of the match when Jayme Danielson won in a tie-breaker over Lynn 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, in a battle of No. 1 players. Danielson's victory gave OU a 4-3 advantage with two matches to play.
SEU's Wendy Reade extended the match by winning a hard fought tie-breaker over Ladonna Barnes. Reade dropped game one, 4-6, won a close second game, 7-5, and then won easily in the tiebreaker, 6-0. Reade's victory tied the score, 4-4, with one match still remaining.
Still left on the court was Oglethorpe's Kate Siess and SEU's Autumn Housefield. Housefield won the first game easily, 6-1, before Siess forced a tie-breaker with a 6-3 victory in game two. In the tie-breaker, Siess ceased control early and never looked back, winning 6-1, and giving Oglethorpe a 5-4 victory.
Southeastern is now 4-9 on the year, and will travel to Franklin Springs, Ga., Friday to play Emmanuel College, at 3:00 p.m.
