Fire Capture Seventh Sun Conference Tournament Title

SEU records two wins Sunday, including 14-8 victory over St. Thomas in final

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Southeastern closed out Championship Sunday with a 14-8 win over St. Thomas to secure the Sun Conference Tournament title at jetBlue Park. The championship is the seventh in program history and fourth in the past six seasons, continuing a consistent run of success for the Fire.

The title game featured early momentum shifts before Southeastern gradually took control. The Fire opened with two runs in the first inning behind RBI singles from Cade Parry and Cooper Ciesielski, but St. Thomas answered with three runs in the bottom half and added another in the second to move ahead 4-2.

Southeastern responded in the middle innings with steady offensive production. A sacrifice fly from Ciesielski in the third trimmed the deficit to one, and the Fire moved back in front in the fourth. Paul Wittmann delivered an RBI double to tie the game before Nathanial Hopkins followed with a run-scoring groundout to give SEU a 5-4 lead.

The game's pivotal stretch came in the fifth inning. Southeastern put together a five-run frame, combining timely hits and situational execution to extend the lead. Cade Parry drove in a run with a single, Dayne Wimberly added an RBI hit, Wittmann contributed a sacrifice fly, Brock McMullen followed with an RBI single, and Hopkins added another run-scoring hit as the Fire built a 10-4 advantage.

St. Thomas continued to apply pressure throughout the game. The Bobcats scored twice in the seventh inning to narrow the margin to 11-6 and later added two more runs in the ninth. Southeastern, however, answered key moments offensively, including two runs in the eighth on RBI hits from Cort Pryor and Parry, and maintained separation through the final innings.

Southeastern finished with 14 runs on 15 hits, with production spread across the lineup. Parry led the way with four hits and four RBI, while Ciesielski added three hits and two RBI. Wittmann drove in three runs, and Hopkins contributed two doubles and two RBI, capping a strong tournament performance that earned him Sun Conference Tournament MVP honors.

On the mound, Southeastern turned to Blake Albritton early, and he provided stability across seven innings, allowing three runs while keeping the game within reach as the offense built its lead. Hayden Givens-Craig followed with a scoreless eighth, and Brody McMullen worked the ninth to close out the game.

The championship win concluded a full day for Southeastern, which earlier completed a 10-5 victory over Webber International in a semifinal game that had been suspended Saturday due to weather.

Southeastern established its early lead before the delay, using a two-run home run from Nathanial Hopkins in the second inning and a two-run homer from Charlie Collins in the third to go ahead 4-0. Webber International scored in the fourth inning before play was halted, leaving SEU with a 4-1 lead overnight.

When play resumed Sunday morning, the Fire extended the lead in the sixth inning. Cort Pryor recorded a sacrifice fly, and Cade Parry followed with a two-run single to push the margin to 7-1.

Webber International responded in the seventh, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 7-5 and bring the game back within reach. Southeastern answered in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly from Brock McMullen and a two-run single from Hopkins to extend the lead to 10-5.

From there, Southeastern's pitching staff held Webber scoreless over the final two innings to secure the win. Byler Reither worked into the seventh inning to earn the victory, and Parker Lambeth, Hayden Givens-Craig, and Brody McMullen combined to finish the game.

With two wins on the day, Southeastern secured the tournament title and now turns its attention to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The Fire will host in Lakeland from May 11–14, with the full field and bracket set to be announced during the NAIA Selection Show on May 6 at 4 p.m. CT.
