Fire Open Tournament Run with Win Over St. Thomas

SEU scores in five innings, advances to Friday matchup at 2 p.m.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Second-seeded Southeastern broke open a tight game in the middle innings and pulled away late for an 11-5 win over No. 5 seed St. Thomas in the opening round of the Sun Conference Tournament on Wednesday at jetBlue Park.

After falling behind early, the Fire methodically flipped the game, using timely extra-base hits and a decisive seventh inning to create separation.

St. Thomas struck first on a solo home run in the second and added another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Southeastern answered immediately, tying the game in the bottom of the third when Jace Essig delivered an RBI double and Cade Parry followed with a sacrifice fly.

The Fire continued to build momentum in the fourth, taking their first lead on a sacrifice fly from Paul Wittmann. Although St. Thomas briefly evened the score in the fifth, Southeastern responded with its most efficient stretch of the afternoon.

Essig sparked the surge again with an RBI double, and Parry and Cooper Ciesielski followed with back-to-back run-scoring doubles to push the Fire in front 6-3.
St. Thomas managed to chip away, but Southeastern's bullpen steadied the game. Parker Lambeth provided a key relief outing, allowing just one hit over 3.1 innings to earn the win.

Holding a two-run lead entering the seventh, the Fire delivered the knockout blow. Cort Pryor lined a two-run single up the middle, and Nathanial Hopkins followed with another two-run knock, stretching the advantage to 10-4 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Essig led the offense with four hits and three runs scored, while Parry drove in three runs and Ciesielski added a pair of RBIs. Southeastern finished with 12 hits and scored in five different innings.

St. Thomas tallied five runs on seven hits but was unable to slow Southeastern's steady offensive pressure, particularly in the middle innings where the Fire seized control.

With the win, Southeastern advances in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of Keiser and Warner on Friday at 2 p.m. as it continues its pursuit of a Sun Conference Tournament title.
