Lopez Guides Fire Past Falcons

Outside hitter records 15 kills on .419 hitting as SEU claims straight-set win

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The SEU Volleyball team stayed dominant at home, sweeping Florida College in straight sets (26-24, 25-16, 25-10) Tuesday night inside The Furnace. With the win, SEU has now captured 18 of its last 19 matches on its home floor.

The opening set was anything but smooth for the Fire. Florida College jumped out to an early 8-3 lead, capitalizing on SEU miscues to put the hosts on their heels. Southeastern slowly chipped away, drawing even at 15-all before falling behind again late. The Falcons reached set point at 24-23, but the Fire refused to fold. Yarelis Lopez delivered back-to-back kills to flip the momentum, and an error by Florida College sealed the 26-24 rally. The Fire ended the frame with 12 kills but leaned just as heavily on defense, digging 20 attacks to stay alive.

Southeastern settled in during the second set, swinging at a .364 clip behind a more balanced offense. Lopez, Laura Bonomi, and Emily Maske paced the attack, while the block came alive with key stops at the net. The Fire put together a 7-2 run midway through the set to create separation and cruise to a 25-16 win.

By the third, the Fire were in complete control. SEU limited the Falcons to just four kills while forcing eight errors, closing the match with a 25-10 runaway. The blocking unit dominated, with Jewel Carling and Lucrezia Ceroni each recording four total blocks and Emma Reed adding three.

For the match, Southeastern finished with 39 kills on a .293 hitting percentage, powered by Lopez's 15 kills at a .419 clip. Bonomi added nine kills, 11 digs, and an ace, while Maske chipped in eight kills on .438 hitting. Marysa Connors anchored the back row with a match-high 20 digs, Lopez added eight, and Speer directed the offense with 19 assists and an ace. The Fire also collected 52 digs and 14 total blocks, holding Florida College to just a .050 attack percentage.

Now 11-2 on the season, Southeastern will look to carry this momentum into Saturday's Sun Conference road test at Keiser University.
