GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Fire traveled to Alabama for their first extended road trip of the season and started out strong. Southeastern University used efficient offense and started the road swing by winning their first two games, 7-2 over Nelson University (Ariz.) and 5-1 over the University of Houston-Victoria.
In game one, with the score tied at two in the bottom of the third, SEU got all the offense they needed, as Erica Ramsey and Lauren Sekinger both lined singles and came around to score. Starting pitcher Maria Zelenka held Nelson scoreless the rest of the day to seal the win.
The Fire got going quickly in the second game, as Chapel Cunningham led off with a single and stole second. Following an Ella Brooks sacrifice bunt, Raylei McKinney connected on a two-run home run and the Fire never trailed. SEU put up single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth, giving Edan Playa her eighth win in the circle this season.
Kassidy Moore led the Fire offensively, going 6-for-7 with a double while scoring twice. Brooks and Hailey Bradley both recorded multi-hit efforts in both games. Brooks went 4-for-7 with a double, run, and two RBI, while Bradley was 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
McKinney singled to go with her two-run home run. Sekinger crossed home three times and singled twice. Nicole Wasserstrom chipped in a 2-for-3 opener. Cunningham went 3-for-4 in the second game with two runs and a stolen base.
Zelenka (8-1) threw a complete game, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks. Playa took the ball in game two, also firing a complete game, giving up six hits and an earned run while striking out four.
With the wins today, the Fire improve to 16-1 on the season. They return to action for another pair games tomorrow, facing off against Morningside at 4:45 p.m. EST and No. 7 University of Cumberlands at 7 p.m EST.
